Florida Gulf Coast University in Fort Myers
This past April, Florida Gulf Coast University, hosted its Arbor Day Observance during the FGCU Student Earth Day, where they planted over a 100 cypress trees and long-leaf pine trees.
The event was managed and planned by Tree Care Advisory Committee members and community forester, Mike Weston. Those who volunteered learned proper tree planting procedures as well as the benefits that trees bring to the Southwest Florida ecosystem. It also served as a way to educate the entire Florida Gulf Coast University community about reducing their carbon footprint, and promoting campus beautification efforts.
One of the most significant components of their project was the opportunity for the volunteers to leave a legacy on their young campus by naming the tree after themselves. This way the volunteers will stay connected to and updated on the trees they planted.
